That's it!!!   The 2021 SSS Champs is over and we have our winners!

After Round 1, the top shot this round was Fletcher Hall (King's High School) with a fantastic 100.8. Well done Fletcher. Only inners behind were Stephanie McNair (Palmerston North Girls' High School) 100.7 and Megan Brodie (Queen Margaret College) 100.6.

The Teams event is already shaping up as being hotly contested, with Palmerston North Girls’ High only 2 points ahead of Whanganui High School and 4 points ahead of defending champions Ashburton. College.

After Round 2, the top shot this round was Megan Brodie (Queen Margaret College) with another 100.6 for a total of 200.12. Well done Megan. This puts her just 1 point ahead of Stephanie McNair (Palmerston North Girls' High School) who is on 199.13 and just another point behind that is James Gray (Whanganui High School) on 198.15. These are top notch scores - Well done!

In the Graded events, the C graders have really set a great example with 6 shooters scoring 98 or better. Matilda Panchaud (Dannevirke High School) leading the way with 100.4 this round. However Finn Darrall (Upper Hutt College) and Eddie Millichamp (Mt Hutt College) are leading C grade, both on scores of 195.08

In the Teams event Palmerston North Girls’ High School extended their lead by another 2 points to be just 4 points ahead of Whanganui High School. Just another 6 points further back are Ashburton College in third place.

Round 3 has just been shot and what a cracker of a competition it's turning out to be.  Since gaining the lead in round 2, Megan Brodie isn't giving anyone the way to get past her, shooting yet another 100.6 (yes... that's three 100.6's she's shot in a row now, so you have to admire that consistency and ability!), but Stephanie McNair is only a point behind in 2nd place, having shot an exceptional 100.9James Gray is 4 points adrift in 3rd place, but the final round is a 20 shot card so it's all up for grabs in perhaps the most exciting final round showdown we've ever had!!!

In the Grades, Stephanie McNair (299.22) is leading Master Grade, Megan Brodie (300.18) is leading A Grade, Cassie Truscott (289.10) is leading B Grade, Finn Darrall (293.11) is leading C Grade and OIiver Mitchell (290.11) is leading D Grade.  None of them are too far out in front to be caught so, again, there's everything to shoot for in this final round.

In the Teams event Palmerston North Girls’ High has romped out to a 15 point lead over defending champions Ashburton College who have overtaken Whanganui High School for second place.

Round 4 - the final round for 2021

Despite the best efforts by COVID 19 to disrupt shooting in New Zealand, we extended the final round to allow time for all the shooters to get back to their ranges after lockdown and now Round 4, the final round, has been shot and the results are in.  Megan Brodie was leading Stephanie McNair by a single point and Stephanie had a higher inner count so it all came down to the final shoot.  Megan shot a 198.13 but Stephanie beat her this round with a 198.14 (for a total of 497.36) - both fantastic scores but Megan managed to hold on to take the overal 2021 SSS Championship win by that single point with a total of 498.31, setting a new SSS Champs record as well - Megan and Stephanie both beat Jack Cavanagh's record of 497.31 which had stood unbeaten since 2013.   Our congratulations to Megan and Stephanie for a brilliant and close-fought competition and for both raising the standard of shooting to a new record high.  Briar Summerhays maintained her lead and stay two inners ahead of a late charge by Abby Pierce to finish in a well deserved 3rd place.  Of note is Emmily MacLean's final round score of 199.15 (the top score across the whole of the final round) which catapulted her from 3rd place in C grade to take the C grade win.  Well done!

In the graded competition the winners were:

  • Master Grade: Stephanie McNair (497.36)
  • A Grade: Megan Brodie (498.21)
  • B Grade: Emmily MacLean (487.23)
  • C Grade: Madison Tourle (487.19)
  • D Grade: Oliver Mitchell (481.16)

After many years of battling, Palmerston North Girls' High School has finally beaten Ashburton College to take the Teams win with a final score of 1929.78.

Congratulations to all our shooters this year.  It's been a difficult time with lockdowns but the standard of shooting has been very high and you've managed to break records and keep the pressure on each other right up to the final round.  Great achievements all round.

2020 Competition - it's over and we have the winners!

A global pandemic and lockdowns might have slightly reduced the number of entrants this year, but it certainly didn't get in the way of some close competition and fantastic shooting

Congratulations to our new champion - Stephanie McNair from Palmerston North Girls' High School, who shot an incredible 497.29, just 2 inners off Jack Cavanagh’s Triple S record of 497.31 set in 2013.  Shania Harrison-Lee (Ashburton College) was second and Abby Pierce (Cambridge High School) was third. Well done.

Ashburton College stepped up in the final round shooting a brilliant 787.48 to take top honours ahead of Palmerston North Girls’ High. Cambridge High comfortably held on to third place.

In any other year Palmerston North Girls’ High’s score of 1941.81 would have comfortably won the event, but Ashburton College’s score of 1954.102 is a new record that will take some beating.

The graded competition was very tight after Round 3 so it was inevitable that positions would change after Round 4. Congrats to those that made the top 3 and well done to those that held on to their top 3 placing and to those that forced their way in. Good stuff.

Round 3 Results

The top shot this round was Stephanie McNair (Palmerston North Girls' High School) who improved on last round's 100.6 to post an incredible 100.8.  Fantastic shooting!!!  Shania Harrison-Lee (Ashburton College) shot a great 99.6 so the competition for the top 3 places is all on with only 3 points separating Stephanie, Shania and Abby.

Ashburton College has responded to Palmerston North Girls’ High’s challenge with a great team total of 392.19 moving them back into first place, just 2 point ahead of Palmerston North Girls’ High. Cambridge High School appears to have a firm hold of third place.

There’s still only 1 point (at the most) separating first and second places in each of B, C and D grades. So there won’t be anyone feeling comfortable going into the last round.

Don’t forget - Round 4 scores are due by Sunday 6th September.  This last round is a 20 shot one, so plenty of opportunity to catch up with those just ahead of you.  Have a great shoot!

Round 2 Results

The top shots this round were Stephanie McNair (Palmerston North Girls' High School) and Abby Pierce (Cambridge High School) both shooting 100.6. Well to both shooters - great shooting.

This moves Stephanie into top spot, just one point ahead of Shania Harrison-Lee and Abby. So it’s a very close race at this stage.

Palmerston North Girls' High had a great round scoring an impressive team total of 391.19 moving them into first place, just 1 point ahead of Ashburton College.

Only 1 point separates first and second place in each of the graded competitions, so again, a close competition all round.

Don’t forget - Round 3 scores are due by Sunday 23th August.

Also - don’t forget Round 4 is a 20 shot. If your newer shooters haven’t done these before it may be time to introduce them to that challenge, as round 4 is not that far away.

Keep up the great shooting.

Round 1 Results

The top shot this round was Shania Harrison-Lee (Ashburton College) with 99.7. Well done Shania. Not far behind are  Piper Benbow (Darfield High School) 98.4 and Stephanie McNair (Palmerston North Girls' High School) 98.3

Our defending champion Ashburton College has got off to a great start but Palmerston North Girls' High are only 3 points behind.  It's early days and the competition is wide open at this stage.

In the grades, Shania Harrison-Lee, the only Master Grader, is leading Master Grade!  Piper Benbow (99.4) is leading A Grade by a single inner from Stephanie McNair (98.3), with Abby Pierce and Emma Smith both on 97.4.  Nathan Allison (97.2) is leading B Grade with Charlotte McKenzie just behind on 96.5.  Cassie Truscott is leading C Grade on 97.3 with Amelia Burt (97.0) and Jack Jones (96.4) close behind.  D Grade is being led by Tayla Pryee on 97.4, with Madi Tourle (96.5) and Mitchell Nicholls (95.3) in hot pursuit!

The National Secondary Schools' Shooting Championship - better known as The NZ Triple S Champs - is New Zealand's newest shooting competition and is now in its 10th year. It is open to all NZ secondary school students. This is aimed at giving secondary school shooters the chance to compete nationally for both individual and team glory and recognition.

Why run this competition?

What we've been hearing from the junior shooters at our club is that there are not enough regular secondary school competitions.

We know that the junior shooters:

  • love regular competition (each club night they are up at the ladder checking out who they are challenging or being challenged by)
  • love badges (all marksmen and rep badges are proudly worn on school uniforms and blazers)
  • do not get to shoot enough 20 shot targets

Who is running this?

The Brooklyn Smallbore Rifle Club (BSRC) is Wellington's largest smallbore shooting club. For a several years now, the BSRC has provided facilities, equipment and coaching for Wellington secondary school shooters. A number of these juniors are currently in, or have been through, the TSNZ Junior Development Squad (JDS) so we've seen what happens when they're given support and competition. We know there are also a number of other clubs out there doing the same thing and there are a large number of juniors being trained and shooting on a regular basis.

Who is eligible to shoot?

The Triple S Champs are open to competitors from any NZ Secondary School.
